Book Star-Spangled Panties Review :

The cheeky title of this book should tip you off that this isn't exactly some dry, academic treatise. Which is not to say that author Carol Strickland doesn't take the subject seriously. She's clearly both deeply knowledgeable and extremely passionate on the topic of Wonder Woman. The result is not so much a history of the character (although there's plenty of historical information here) as it is a book-length rant, as she combs through 80 years of comic books, discarding the bits she thinks are wrong-headed or dumb ("Nevah happened!"), and trying to get at the essential core and true meaning of the iconic Amazon Princess. I happen to agree with most of her conclusions, but even if you don't, it's a bracing and thought-provoking argument, presented with authority, conviction, and a good dose of humor. My favorite section is near the end, where she goes through each era and lists her "essential reading", the stories where the writers got it right (or nearly so). It's a great overview of the character's evolution through the decades. If you're a casual fan, this book may be a little too "inside baseball" for your tastes. And if you're interested in Wonder Woman in other media besides comics, there's not much here for you (the author discusses the Lynda Carter tv series and the Gal Gadot movies just long enough to let you know she doesn't think they're worth discussing). But if you're invested in Wonder Woman and what she represents, the perspective here is well worth your time.
This book was a DELIGHTFUL read. I've read a lot of books on Wonder Woman, on Wonder Woman's history, on the backgrounds of the characters and world, but this was by far the most enjoyable - and why, you might ask? Because the author, Ms Strickland, has A. POINT. OF. VIEW. There's so sanitized telling of the history worrying about whether the company (DC/Warners) looks bad. You get the full TEA, and it is delivered with humor and loads of opinion. I ADORED how opinionated this book is - and I didn't always agree with them all, but I really appreciated that there was a definite point of view, instead of tiptoeing around things and not upset the cart, I like that the opinions presented in this book (and they are presented as self-aware opinions) are straight-forward and honest. It is a gift to get this type of content. And whether you agree with what the author says or not, the one thing that is 100% clear is that the author wants only the very, very best for Wonder Woman, and I respect the heck out of that.I really enjoyed the Kindle edition with the color pictures. I also really enjoyed how each chapter of the book begins with a quote from a fan about Wonder Woman or the characters and world. It made me, the reader, feel like I was getting an inside peek into the fandom, and I appreciated that. The book focuses mainly on the Golden, Silver, Bronze, and Iron Ages of comics, with less emphasis on the Wonder Woman comic at the point of the Post-Gail Simone run. And as a long-time Wonder Woman fan, I agree that the New 52 era was terrible for Wonder Woman (it was so bad, I stopped buying the comic then), but it would have been nice to acknowledge that the Rebirth Era was a welcome change in a better direction.I enjoy the writing voice of Ms Strickland, who has a keen sense of humor that she smartly sprinkles throughout the book. There is nothing dull or boring here, because facts are accompanied with her personal take, and even when she hates something, she's wise in that she expresses it in a fun or funny way. This book was well-worth my time, and I'm grateful for being able to get this extended take on a very long-time fan's view. Well done!
