Wow! Did I love this book. Andy is as snarky as ever. He's still terrified of Laurie. Doesn't understand a word Marcus speaks. The usual. Except this novel takes place in Maine (where Rosenfelt actually lives now), and the bad guys are truly nasty. The good ones are mixed, which makes them more real. Including Matt, the client, who is accused of a violent double murder in Maine. Andy meets him in NJ, however, where Matt saves a dog from an abusive owner.Don't want to give anything away. Just go with it. Funny, scary, thoughtful, and I adore the dogs (and I'm a cat person). Best of the best! How can a murder mystery be described as “lighthearted?” Reluctant lawyer Andy Carpenter is once again drawn into defending an accused murderer whose guilt seems undeniable. It is a deadly serious situation and not a laughing matter. But Rosenfelt’s style is tongue in cheek from beginning to end. Andy is such a sympathetic character with his hilariously self-deprecating commentary. He has an everyman aversion to danger, and yet, in his efforts to find the evidence that will exonerate his clients, he inevitably ends up in life-threatening situations. When confronting the bad guys, you can almost feel his heart pounding and his palms sweating as his knees turn to jelly. He would never put himself in such situations if not for the fact that his on-call bodyguard, Marcus -- enormous, inscrutable, invincible and unstoppable – is always there to save the day. The recurring characters along with Andy and Marcus include Andy’s wife, Laurie, a former cop and now his chief investigator/advisor; their young son, Ricky; Andy’s CPA and super-hacker/wannabe tough guy, Sam; his extremely reluctant once-in-a-while secretary, Edna; and, of course, their dogs, Tara and Sebastian. I would read anything that David Rosenfelt wrote (I actually think that I have!) regardless of the storyline. His Andy Carpenter stories are written with such humor and he always figures out why the cops have charged the wrong person and who the real perpetrator is. This story was no different. He wraps everything up with a completely satisfying explanation and all is well at the end. I already have the next book in the series queued up and ready to read!
